Beautiful Geneva is a city which is dear to my heart. I did spend some of the best time of my life during the three years I have lived there. Despite being a small city, Geneva is a wonderful town offering tons of activities at any time of the year. But here is the list of the top 10 best things I loved doing when living in this incredible city.
1. Spend a Day at the Lake
Lake Geneva or Lac Léman is one of the biggest and most beautiful lakes in Europe. In summer, people enjoy going to the beach and spending a day at the lake doing water sports, renting a boat or just sunbathing. There are so many breathtaking spots to discover along the lake shores, that you will hold your breath away.
2. Hike the Mont Salève
Mount Salève – also called Balcony of Geneva – is a mountain of the neighbouring France, located in Haute-Savoie. You could either get there hiking or via cable car. Regardless of how you reach the top, you will be enjoying a spectacular panorama of Geneva and its magical lake.
3. Eat Cheese Fondue
Any time of the year is perfect to gather some friends and have a convivial and authentic Swiss meal such as cheese fondue. There are tons of great places where to enjoy this delicious dish of melted cheese. However, the Buvette at Bains des Pâquis and Restaurant Edelweiss are must visit spots.
4. Take a Selfie at the Jet d’Eau
The Jet d’Eau is Geneva’s most famous landmark. This large fountain is featured in Geneva’s most important websites and can be seen from different viewpoints throughout the city but also from the air. So, needless to say that a selfie with the Jet d’Eau is a must when in Geneva.
5. Wander Around the Old Town and Admire City Views from Saint-Peter’s Cathedral
Geneva’s old town or Vieille Ville in French is an ancient maze of small streets and picturesque squares, filled with cosy cafes, authentic restaurants, cute little boutiques, galleries and museums. The architecture and historical buildings will throw you back in history. The must see place is Saint-Peter’s Cathedral, as it also offers breathtaking views over the city of Geneva.
6. Watch the Sunset
Surprisingly and to the contrary of what many people can think, Geneva is a romantic place offering wonderful sunrise and sunset views. There are many spots where you can head to in order to watch crazy sunsets. Genève Plage, or Bain des Pâquis are the best locations though.
7. Wine Tasting at Caves Ouvertes
Once a year, the wine-growers in Geneva canton open their vineyard to the public to promote their local wine production. During one full day, you can get to taste free wine and buy bottles at a relatively great price. Caves ouvertes is a great activity for wine lovers who love sharing their passion with friends.
8. Discover Carouge, the Italian Side of Geneva
Carouge is a few tram stops away from Geneva centre even though it feels like stepping in into a different country. Built by Italian architects, this neighbourhood has a strong Mediterranean influence with street markets, shops, bars and cafes. Visiting Carouge just feels like travelling away from Switzerland for a moment.
9. Spend a Day at a Park
Geneva is a green town that has multiple beautiful parks, such as Parc des Bastions, Jardin des Anglais, Parc de la Perle du Lac or Parc de la Grange. Most of them are located along the lake. Hence, they do offer stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains. When the weather is nice, it is a must to spend a day at the park having a picnic or barbecue while admiring the beautiful landscapes.
10. Party Like an Animal
Geneva may be a small city but it is wild enough to host some of the craziest parties you’d ever attend. From cocktail bars, to outdoor lounges and high-end clubs, you simply can’t get bored. Check out on Atelier Cocktail if you are looking for great drinks, Les Voiles if you fancy chic outdoor partying or Baroque if you want to dance the night away on the floor! However, if you are more into alternative partying, then L’Usine will be your thing!
