Long Weekend Getaway in Le Massif de Charlevoix, Quebec

What a better treat than going to one of the most beautiful areas of Quebec to celebrate its national day? Located only 3 hours drive away from Montreal, Le Massif de Charlevoix is a perfect destination for the long week-end of “La Saint-Jean”. The number of activities to do in the area are endless, which is a good excuse for renting a chalet with friends for a couple of days.

Le Massif de Charlevoix is a ski area in Quebec which is very popular among ski enthusiasts in winter. However, it is also a beautiful region to go to in summer to do some hiking, kayaking, camping or relaxing. In fact, it offers breathtaking views overlooking the St Lawrence river and the mountains at the same time. It is a great place to go to for a long weekend to enjoy the beautiful surroundings during the day while relaxing in a chalet during the night.

The Chalet

It is very popular in Quebec to go on a chalet weekend getaway with friends. And the choice of the chalet is very important despite the fact that it may look banal. In fact, it is so important that you may end up changing your entire weekend plans if you did not manage to find the jewel you were looking for. So why is that?

Because the chalet is the first location you will spend most of your time and have most of your fun. In that sense, it has to be big, welcoming and cosy. It should also have beautiful views. But most importantly it MUST have a spa, with a jacuzzi at minimum.

We were so lucky because we were able to get a beautiful chalet having all these characteristics without having to change our weekend plans. Our chalet was located close to Baie-Saint-Paul, it was cute, welcoming and offered beautiful views. But it also had an amazing jacuzzi which we could enjoy every single day. Honestly the jacuzzi was killer because it just felt so good plunging into the hot bubbled water after an intensive day filled with activities.

The number of activities you could do in the region is endless. However, since you simply can’t get it all in one weekend, you have to be choice-full. So, here is a list of things I would recommend doing. We did them and really loved them!

1. Hiking

Go on a hiking adventure on top of the Mont du Lac-des-Cygnes in the beautiful Grands-Jardins National Park. This 9km trail is short but tough enough to make you sweat as you reach the summit. For three hours, you will go through beautiful greenery paths, encounter colorful squirrels, admire beautiful landscapes and feel a great satisfaction of accomplishment.

When we went trekking, the weather wasn’t clement with us. However, the fog and rain made the entire landscape even more beautiful. It felt like we were shooting an episode of Game of Thrones or so.

2. Kayaking

The Saguenay Fjord National Park is a natural attraction that is a must-see. There are so many things to do and admire. You could head to Tadoussac and do whale watching or you could just hang out around the park for fishing. However, you could also go on a sea kayak excursion with Fjord En Kayak by navigating along the fjord. We opted for the last option and I am so happy we did so. This was one of the best experiences I have had and the team was so professional, experienced and friendly. I highly recommend it.

3. Visiting the Region

The Charlevoix region is so beautiful that if you decide to sit and stick to your car for the day, that is also fine. Road tripping is fun as you drive across beautiful landscapes. You can go at your own pace, stop by the places you like, take a picture and hit the road again. This is also cool, isn’t it?

4. Gambling

Those who know me would know that I love gambling a little bit. So any excuse is valid to visit a Casino if there is one near me. Charlevoix hosts a cute Casino right next to the historic Manoir Richelieu that has become the Fairmont Hotel. I highly recommend you pay a visit at the Casino for a little bit of gambling. In addition, you could also take that opportunity to have a drink with a view at the Fairmont Hotel or just a walk in the surroundings.

5. Relaxing

Obviously, taking time to relax on a weekend is key. After all, you are on a break and should take time to chill. Hence, the importance of having a cool chalet with a spa 🙂
